My order from Amazon came in last night.

No, not the latest novel from (insert name of megastar writer here).
No, not the latest DVD featuring (insert name of super cool action flick here).
No, not the latest CD featuring (insert name of power rock band from the 70s here).

But, it is a CD.

I snagged the Final Fantasy XII Limited Edition Original Soundtrack (4CD set).

People may or may not like video games, but this is one hell of a soundtrack and it's definitely going into my iTunes in my "Writing Music" category. I foresee many enjoyable hours writing to this music. Strong string sections, great low brass accompaniment, just enough woodwinds to keep things honest and a solid tympani going in the background (one of my old instruments).

So, not only did this game pull me in, (I'd love to find out who's got the publishing rights for any fiction based on this game), but the soundtrack is keeping me in love with the game.

Where's that controller? *grin*

Last year (or the year before...) I went to see the Houston Symphony perform the "Video Games Live" concert, where they played video game music from over the years, from the early days of things like Frogger and Asteroids, to full symphonic compositions for recent games. I'm pretty sure Final Fantasy was included in there. Some of the music being composed for video games these days is pretty darn amazing.

It's times like these I wish I could read Japanese.

They have the orchestra listed (names and instruments), but there's no English translation on the document. (Hell, even the 4 CD case looks like a DVD case with the obi wrapped around it.)

Yeah, I would enjoy sitting back and listening to this orchestra live.

...sometimes video games have the most amazing soundtracks.

What else is on your music to write to list?

Re: Yeah...
Depends on what I'm writing.

When I'm working on one of my fantasy stories, I tend to listen to various soundtracks (Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Princess Bride, Ladyhawke, First Knight, Henry V) or else Keiko Matsui (jazz piano) and Mannheim Steamroller's Fresh Aire CDs.

For SF, I've been enjoying the Babylon 5 episode sound tracks or some of my anime soundtracks (Bubblegum Crisis, FLCL or Noir mainly).

For the YA Urban Fantasy I'm working on, I've been listening to Lacuna Coil, Black Sabbath, Scorpions, Steppenwolf, or Uriah Heep.

Re: Yeah...
Haven't heard the Gladiator soundtrack. May have to check it out.

Not familiar with "Warriors of the Silver Screen". I may have to google for it to see what movies are represented.
